All weather occurs in the lower atmosphere, the troposphere.  Meteorologists study this area.  They find out and research what is going on up there.  All kinds of storms occur every year.  There are several factors:  air pressure, warm and cold fronts, precipitation, dew point, temperature, etc.  Here you can learn about what goes on up there and how it all works.

In 1998, according to the Worldwatch Institute, more than 30,000 deaths and close to $90 billion in damage were caused by severe storms.  These powerful storms are created when warm, light air rises quickly into higher, colder air in an unstable updraft that can reach over 100 miles per hour.  Thunderstorms are so common that there are an estimated 2,000 in progress over Earth's surface at any moment.  Most of these storms produce tornados and hail.
